Preserving Family History, Sharing Personal Interests

Family History is the sum of many individuals and events.  When we know about the lives of our forebears we can better understand where we came from and who we are today.  These are stories of two families which came together through the marriage of Daniel Maurice and Margaret Robinson in 1974.

As well Daniel and Margaret would like to share their interests in photography and art.

Introduction

In June 2013 researchers released the results of the first survey of European genealogical ancestry covering the past 3,000 years.  They found that virtually all people of European descent are related—even if they now live on opposite sides of the continent.   Moreover the researchers concluded that a pair of modern Europeans living in neighbouring populations shared up to 12 common ancestors over the past 1,500 years, and upwards of 100 ancestors from the 1,000 years before that.  In other words, go back far enough and just about everybody is related to just about everybody else.

Genealogy—researching your family history—is fascinating and frustrating in equal measure.  Sometimes it feels like you’re a detective trying to solve a mystery without enough clues.  But when a missing piece of information turns up it becomes very satisfying to be able to piece together another chapter in the lives of your ancestors.

The Internet and digitisation of old records has transformed genealogy.  Research that once required time-consuming and expensive visits to individual graveyards and churches, or hit-and-miss searches through old newspapers, has been replaced by online access to an incredible range of historical records and powerful search tools.  As well, family trees recording the information you have gathered can now be managed with powerful software that stores the results electronically and allows you to easily share your results with family and friends on the web.

This family history section reflects the intersection of the Anglo-Celtic-Irish roots of the family of Margaret Louise Robinson (born Sydney, Australia 1954) with the Slovene background of the family of Daniel Jadran Maurice (born Sydney, Australia 1951).

Maurice-Robinson Family Tree

A detailed genealogical tree for both the Maurice and Robinson families is available as a compliment to this website on MyHeritage, an online genealogy platform.

There are two versions of the Maurice-Robinson tree. One, focussing on direct line ancestors, contains about 2,000 individuals. This tree is under active review and information is being constantly added or corrected. On the MyHeritage Maurice-Robinson website it is called “Maurice-Robinson close family”.

There is also a more expansive version which includes both direct and indirect ancestors. It includes details of about 28,000 individuals representing around 6,000 different families and almost 3,000 unique surnames. On the MyHeritage Maurice-Robinson website this version of the tree is called “Maurice-Robinson extended family”.

Note that the larger tree has been subject to far less “quality control” than the close family version. Specific details for individuals, especially in distant family lines, should not be relied upon without further checking for accuracy.

Our family history is presented as a series of short stories about different family members through the years.  Some are based on genealogical research; others on the personal memories of Daniel, Margaret and other family members.
